Can I take a segmented trip?
Many people do not like to take a round about voyage, having neither the time nor the money. Segmented trips are possible with a stop over in port for as long as you want. You can resume your voyage or fly home by plane or return by train, for example from Northern China via trans-Siberian railway and then fly back home.
How long do freighters stay in port
Port stops are usually around 18-24 hours. Most travellers travel by freighter because they like the experience of being at sea, not sight seeing in ports. It is possible to make voyage from say, Hamburg Germany to Auckland, NZ, lay over a week and return on the same ship when it again stops in Auckland (having sailed to Australia in the interim).
How many passengers are on a freighter?
Most ships carry a maximum of twelve passengers, but most commonly there will be only few others besides you or, if you are lucky enough, you might even be the only one among the crew.
What are accommodations and meals like?

Accommodations on a freighter are rather nice, and are equal to, or better than, deluxe accommodations on cruise ships. All ships have a small refrigerator in each cabin and sometimes a TV or VCR. There are elevators on most of the cargo ships, but you still might need to get used to climbing some stairs. See the accommodation section for more details.

Meals on freighters are very good, including French cuisine with French cheeses and wine every day, but don’t expect ice sculptures, midnight chocolate buffets or mountains of chilled shrimp. Passengers eat in the officer's mess. The mess steward serves food. There is no choice as to the menu; you can see the example of the menu here:

How much does a freighter voyage cost?
Travel by freighter usually runs between 100 - 140€ per day for a single person travelling in a single cabin. When should I make my travel arrangements?
Unlike an airline, you cannot call us on a Friday evening and expect to leave on Monday. Allow several months to plan your trip, for example you would need to start the arrangements in early January to leave in the middle of April. However, keep in mind that some routes are very popular and you may have to arrange for your voyage many months ahead of your desired departure date.
Is the schedule and ports of call presented final and absolute?
The route, dates and times may be modified without notice if the conditions and priorities defined by the Maritime Company so dictate; these being based on the commercial priorities of freight transport
Can I work on a freighter for all or part of my passage?
The answer is simple. NO! Sit back and enjoy the ride. .
How much luggage can I bring with me?
There is no luggage service: passengers are expected to carry their luggage on board. Allowance of 100 kg of personal belongings per passenger (household appliances, furniture and bulky luggage are not permitted). All luggage must be stored in cabin.
Prices per crossing for exceeding luggages:
- Excess by 10 kg units (per passenger): 14€
- Bike: 25€.
- Prices for other cargo can be obtained on request.
Are there any restrictions on the type of luggage that I bring with me?
Yes, there are very strict regulations regarding weapons and illegal goods, which are not  allowed on board under any circumstances. If you are caught violating this rule you will be severely punished according to the French Laws. You can familiarize yourself with the list of such prohibited goods in our contract, points 7.8 to 7.11 (Downloads section of the site).
Are there any security checks?
Yes, due to the new procedures regarding security in all ports, there may be intensive checks of luggage and/or passengers including body search by security authorities or appointees, i.e. the ship’s security officer.
So, what can I do on a freighter?
Remember, that a freighter is a working ship and passengers are secondary. Thus, there is no such thing as a cruise director. But there’s plenty of time to read, get some sun, hang out on the bridge, do some sports, swim, watch videos. Meals are something to look forward to as they provided an opportunity for some interesting conversation with the ship's officers.

You can buy all the beer, liquor and cigarettes you want, tax free. But, don't expect to find your favourite Scotch or Whiskey on board. Selections are limited, but more then enough.
Will I get seasick?
Could be. Unlike cruise ships, there are no stabilizers on freighters. Accordingly, there can be a significant amount of pitch and roll, depending on the size of the ship, amount of cargo, and weather. Most of the time, waves do not exceed 3 meters, usually less. As a general rule, the bigger the ship and the more cargo aboard, the smoother the "ride".
Can I bring electrical appliances?
All ships have a 220 volt power supply. Accordingly, if you are coming from a country with a different volt power normally used you should check to see if your computer, razor, radio, etc., have a 110-220V-option switch. If not, you will need a converter. If you are from the U.S., you will need a plug converter (square to round prongs, but you can usually find one on the ship). A small, portable, AM/FM/SW radio is nice to have along, so you can stay in touch with what's going on in the world.
What can I buy on-board?
Cigarettes, beer, soft drinks, toothpaste and the like. Currency accepted: Euros (for french flag ships only ) & US dollars. Credit card & cheques can’t be accepted. There is no tax on items purchased on the high sea, however the ship's "slop chest" is locked while the ship is in port.
What should I pack to wear?
It depends upon where you are going and the time of year. Attire is very informal. Jeans, T-shirts, and shorts will work. Leave your coats and ties at home as well as any fancy dresses, unless you want to wear them ashore. Rubber soled shoes (not boat shoes) are a must. Leather soled shoes should be left at home. Since shoes are removed in all carpeted areas of the ship they should be easy to take on and off. This is important as often the deck is wet or has residue from the engine's exhaust.
Is a freighter noisy?
Not really, unless you like to hang out in the engine room. There is a much higher noise level than on a cruise ship, but, like vibration, it is minimal.
What languages are spoken aboard ship?
English and French. The captain usually has an excellent command of both, the rest of crew's level might not be as good.
What about ship-board etiquette?
All members of the ship's crew are addressed as "Mr.", unless they tell you to call them by their first name. Do not go on the bridge without asking permission, even though usually passengers have access to the bridge at all times. The only exception may be during the period when the harbour pilot is aboard. As you will be in an entirely new environment, it will take a few days to get a feeling for the ship and its crew. It is a good idea to learn the name of all officers and crew (there are only 17-20) as soon as possible. It is also recommended that you learn a few words or phrases in the native language or languages of the crew members.
Can I bring my pet?
No. However, you can ship your four or five favourite polo ponies from here to there in a container! Of course, the owner is required to have them accompanied by a trainer/keeper, and they will be subject to quarantine regulations.
What about visas?
You will be required to check yourself with the embassies of the countries of the chosen destination to be sure of the visa requirements of the various countries (some of the information can be obtained from us on request). For example Australia requires a visa for all foreign nationals arriving by ship. Same for China, but not Hong Kong. The fact that you never leave the vessel is of no consequence. Most countries do not even bother to stamp your passport, though they do check it. The Captain might ask for your passport after you board and you may be invited to his cabin for a "chat" with immigration officials after docking, even though most of time it is not the case especially when at the large ports, like Hong Kong or Southampton..
We also advise you to have passport-size photos for certain ports of call (required by local authority).
Will I need any immunizations?
Again, it depends upon where you are going. No immunizations are required for travel between Europe, the U.S., Canada and Australia. However, up-to-date record of vaccination (vaccinations advisable: HEPATITIS A + TYPHOID) is preferred. YELLOW FEVER and CHOLERA vaccinations are mandatory for crossing of Panama and Suez channels.
How do I board the vessel?
You should note that as soon as you embark, you are supposed to hand over to the Captain or the officer in charge your complete travel documents like passport, and, if need be, vaccination card and additional travel documents without being asked. Usually, these documents are already required by the authorities before leaving the port.
The Captain may decline to allow the boarding of the Passenger if one of the documents requested is missing.
Can I just go ashore whenever I want?
Yes, but besides checking that all your visa requirements for the certain port are satisfied you will also be required to take with you the following documents:

  • copy of the passport
  • copy of the Ticket
  • if possible, a mobile phone with phone number of the vessel (in order to know the last sailing time, in case the vessel has to leave berth earlier as scheduled)
  • name & phone number of the port agent.
